Education
The Education Department offers a variety of services to fulfill
resident's needs. During orientation residents complete two required
programs on the computer: Computer Awareness and Life Coping Skills.
Those residents who have not earned a high school diploma or GED may
work on a on a GED via a computer program, books, or tutoring.
Educational counseling is available regarding college or vocational
programs. Current catalogs and application material are available for
all colleges in Montana. Financial aid materials and help filling out
applications is available. Appointments with admissions counselors at
the local colleges are also available.

Those residents wishing to learn typing/keyboarding may do so through a
computer course. Those wishing some basic computer literacy can learn
basic computer operation through WordPerfect, Quicken, Word, etc.
Help is also available to write resumes , cover letters, business
letters, parole plans, and to fill out various forms. During tax season,
residents learn to fill out their tax forms for the current year. If
they have not filed tax returns for the three previous, they can file
tax returns for any of those years.
Skill building in English usage, Basic math, algebra and geometry is
available on computer programs. Manuals for drivers license, motorcycle
supplement, and commercial drivers licenses are available for test
preparation. Simple legal forms such as a bill of sale and power of
attorney can be created here,. Test administration is also conducted for
Career Exploration inventory and the Risk and Needs Assessment.
Reading materials--paperbacks, magazines, and the Great Falls Tribune-
are also available in the education office.
Programs
The following are programs currently being taught or provided at the
Great
Falls Transition Center for residents.
HUMAN CHOICES
The Human Choices Program has been provided to residents of the center
for the past ten years. It is a unique program which takes approximately
ten weeks to complete and consists of one weekly session, a combination
workbook and personal planner.
THE GOALS OF THE HUMAN CHOICES PROGRAM ARE
TWOFOLD:
1. To increase the awareness of the participants to their uniqueness and
limitless potential.
2. To increase their sense of positive purpose and direction, utilizing
goal setting skills.
In a very real sense, the Choices Program helps individual to identify
and take ownership in determining their future. Practicing new thoughts
can lead to new habits which form new behaviors.
MORAL RECOGNITION THERAPY (MRT)
Moral Recognition Therapy (MRT) is a systematic, step by step treatment
strategy designed to enhance self-image, promote growth of positive
identity and facilitate higher levels of moral reasoning. Using a
cognitive approach, it attempts to re-educate clients to display
positive habits and value-oriented behavior based on high levels of
moral judgment.
There are a total of 17 steps in the MRT program, 12 of which are
completed within a group setting, Seven groups are provided within the
Center during the course of a normal week on the men's side and three
groups on the women's side. Each resident (male and female) is required
to enroll in and complete MRT as condition of residency at the Center.
MRT is a therapeutic approach which stresses the importance of following
rules and morals set forth by society.
